Best type of lumber for raised beds?

We are trying to make inexpensive raised beds, and are considering pressure treated lumber. Does anyone know if the chemicals used in the lumber are safe to use around plants producing edible fruit or not? If they aren't safe, do you have any low cost alternative suggestions?
