My gray roots are hard to color?

I use a light brown mocha haircolor and 20 volume, but within less than a week I can see my roots again. I leave the professional color on for 40 minutes. What am I doing wrong.? I should only have to touch up maybe once a month but I need to do it 2 to 3 times right now? ( I use Matrix Socolor )
